Introduction To Engineering Drawing

In engineering drawing, engineering-related objects like walls, electrical fitting, pipes, machines, buildings, etc are drawn with specific shapes and sizes so they require different Types of Engineering Drawing Instruments.

Nowadays various type of engineering drawing software is available which is given more accuracy but in small construction area used mostly used only paper drawing so in this article we briefly discuss various type of drawing instrument which is used for engineering drawing.

Types of Engineering Drawing Instruments

The following types of engineering drawing instruments,

- Drawing Board

- T-Square

- Set Squares

- Protractor

- Drawing Sheet

- Mini Drafter

- Drawing Pencils

- Drawing Pins/Clips

- Compass

- French Curve

- Roller Scale

- Circle Master

- Sharpener

- Eraser

- Handkerchief

1. Drawing Sheet

Drawing Sheet

A drawing sheet is one type of normal white paper on which an object is drawn that is available in various sizes and the sheet is used for engineering drawing.

The color of the drawing sheet is white and has a uniform thickness and smooth surface. Also, the various drawing sheets recommended by Indian standards are given,

2. Drawing Board

Drawing Board

A drawing board is a rectangular type board that is made up of soft wood and the main purpose of using it is to support the drawing sheet, so the drawing board is made according to the drawing sheet.

The wood portion is joined by a grove and tongue-type joint for preventing cracks, at the edge of the board is straight ebony and it is provided for the T-square usage.

Various sizes of drawing boards are given by Indian standard which is enlisted below,

Type of Drawing Board (L X B X H) Length X Width X Thickness (mm)D0 1500 X 1000 X 25D1 1000 X 700 X 25D2 700 X 500 X 15D3 500 X 350 X 15Size of Drawing Board

3. Mini Drafter

Mini Drafter

Mini Drafter is a drawing instrument that is used for multiple functions in drawing, it contains two arms it is adjustable in nature so that you can set it according to your required angle and at the lower end arm a scale is attached.

Also, the scale set contains the two scales that are perpendicular to each other, and it is used for inclined lines, parallel lines, angles, perpendicular lines, vertical lines, etc.

Eraser

Erasers are used for removing lines or any spot that is drawn by mistake or drawn with the wrong measurement and also remove the extra projection lines.

so that you should use soft and good quality erase for drawing, it should not damage the drawing sheet and also make the drawing neat and clean.

5. Paper Holders

Drawing Sheet

When the drawing sheet is put on the drawing board it may not be fixed in position so that this paper holder or clips are used for putting the sheet in place.

Commonly the paper holders are clips, spring clips, stick tape, thumb pins, etc, but care should be taken while removing the stick tap or clips otherwise the drawing sheet may damage.

6. T-Square

T Square

T- Square is mainly used for drawing the vertical and horizontal lines on the drawing sheet, and it is made up of plastic and wood material.

This engineering drawing instruments shape is T so which is called T-Square and its vertical part is called a blade and horizontal part is called a head, working edge of T Square is used for drawing.

The lines anywhere inside the sheet with the help of moving the T square top to bottom.

7. Pencils

Pencils

This drawing pencil is used to draw something on the sheet, so that requires a good quality pencil, and that is decided based on the hardness of the pencil.

The pencils are classified under 18 grades but out of 18 mainly the following 4 types of pencils are used in engineering drawing. This is one of the most useful and used engineering drawing instruments.

8. Sharpener

Sharpener

This sharpener is used for sharpening the pencil worn and makes the surface worn pointed and smooth, the sharpener is important as it is a pencil, and erasers are used for making a drawing.

9. Handkerchief

Handkerchief

The handkerchief is used to make the paper clean on which the drawing is being done.

10. Roller Scale

Roller Scale

A Roller scale is a multipurpose instrument that allows you to draw a horizontal parallel line, vertical parallel line as well as crosshatching, triangle, and angles.

The biggest advantage is that it the easy to use and easy to draw projection lines and also not like fixing like a mini drafter on the sheet and drawing board.

11. Set Squares

Set Square

The set square is used to draw the lines with an angle between them and mostly the line is 30 degrees, 45, 60, and 90 degrees, so the set square is make work easy for this type of angle drawing.

Commonly the set squares are two types of tools, one is a 45-degree square and another is a 30–60 degree set square, this 45-degree set square has a side of 25 centimeters while a 30–60 degree set square has a 25cenimeter length on one side.

12. Protector

Protector

This protector is used to measure the accurate angle as well as draw the line in the drawing sheet; it is made of plastic material and transparent in nature.

Also, the shape of the protector is a semi-circle and the edge part of the semi-circle is consisting reading with one-degree accuracy.

The bottom portion of a protector is marked the 0 degrees to 180 degrees.

Compass

This compass instrument is made of steel material and consists of two legs, one leg contains a needle at the bottom and the other leg contains a ring that rings placing a pencil for making a circle.

This needle tip is placed at the respected point and the pencil tip is adjusted according to your dimension. This compass is used to draw the circle, and arc with a dimension on engineering drawing.

14. Circle Master

Circle Master

Circle Master is a very useful template-type engineering drawing instruments that allow to you quickly draw the various radius of circles.

it is a circular or flat plate with various-sized holes punched on the top of the surface.
